Foster care providers are essential to the successful placement of some of our pets. Fosters take pets with special needs into their homes for additional care and/or training away from the stress of the shelter. Foster care providers are special people who know, that while they may put hours into a pet, they can't control the outcome.

Pets are placed in a foster home based on the type(s) of animals the provider tells us they can care for in accordance with an established set of guidelines provided by the shelter. Pets are left in the foster home until such time as the provider and/or the shelter feel the pet is ready to return to us for placement in a new home. Some foster "children" are adopted as a result of the diligent efforts of the provider to help us find an appropriate home.

The adoption of our "furry" foster children only occurs through the shelter. If a foster parent finds a potential adopter for their charge, the adopter must apply at, and be approved by the shelter. Foster care isn't easy, but for all of us who have provided for a special pet in this way, it's one of the most rewarding things you can do.

Please contact Sara Taylor at the shelter at (540)434-5270, or email sara.rhspca@yahoo.com about this exciting and rewarding volunteer opportunity.
